Jews and cannabis go way back–like, biblical-times back! From ancient rituals to modern-day breakthroughs, the relationship between Jews and this legendary plant is anything but ordinary.

I saw this firsthand at the Jewish Museum of Florida’s “Kosher Kush” exhibit, which shed light on the deep-rooted connection between Jews and cannabis. The exhibit explored everything from ancient Israelite ceremonies–where cannabis may have been burned in religious rituals–to the modern pioneers shaping the industry today.

Think about it: thousands of years ago, Israelites might have been lighting up (or at least burning cannabis) in sacred ceremonies to reach higher states–literally. Archaeological findings suggest that cannabis played a role in religious rites, possibly enhancing spiritual experiences.

Fast forward to modern times, and Jews have been at the forefront of game-changing discoveries. Ever heard of THC? You can thank Israeli scientist Raphael Mechoulam for that–he’s the guy who first identified it and helped uncover the entire endocannabinoid system, revolutionizing our understanding of cannabis and medicine.

But it doesn’t stop there. Jews have been key players in the counterculture and medical marijuana movements, fighting for legalization long before it was mainstream. And today, Jewish entrepreneurs are shaping the cannabis industry, from growing and distributing top-tier products to designing the coolest paraphernalia on the market.

Visiting Kosher Kush made it clear: whether in spirituality, science, activism, or business, the Jewish connection to cannabis runs deep. This plant isn’t just a pastime–it’s part of a rich, evolving tradition.

The Jewish Museum of Florida – FIU is located at 301 Washington Avenue in Miami Beach in a historic building that once served as Congregation Beth Jacob. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday from 10:00am – 4:00pm with free admission on Saturdays. Mark your calendars and don’t miss the Kosher Kush exhibit before it closes on 4/20!
